NEW DELHI: After weeks of suffering and distress caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, there is some good news coming from India: the number of COVID-19 cases reported daily in the country is declining. However, there are still concerns as the death toll in India continues to rise.
Compared to other countries, the first wave of coronavirus did not create much havoc in India. But the deadly second wave of COVID-19 has completely ravaged the world’s second most populated nation. Hospitals across the country are running out of beds, oxygen, and other medical supplies; in short, the pandemic has put the entire health-care system into disarray.
As India began to see a decline in COVID cases at the end of last year and early this year, the government relaxed most of the restrictions. This allowed people to travel and congregate, and some may have even breached public health guidelines. The public has criticised the government for holding assembly elections in April, which has also led to a surge in COVID cases.
The number of infections in India started to rise again in February. The increase in cases was initially moderate, but the infection spread at an alarming rate from the month of April. India reported more than 2 lakh cases per day by mid-April, compared to 72,330 cases reported on April 1. By the end of April, the country had seen nearly four lakh cases every day, and on May 7, India set an all-time high of 4,14,188 new daily cases.
However, since then, cases have been steadily declining as many Indian states have implemented partial and complete lockdowns. On Wednesday, 2,67,334 people were confirmed to be infected with COVID-19. This is the third day in a row that the country has recorded less than three lakh cases. This brings the total number of COVID-19 cases in India to 2,54,96,330.
While these statistics bring some relief to the nation, concerns remain as the number of deaths reported daily continues to rise. India registered 4,529 COVID-19-related deaths in a 24-hour period on Wednesday, the highest single-day rise so far. No other country has come close to the daily death toll of 4000 this year and most have seen drop in fatalities in recent weeks.
Meanwhile, the Central Government reports that the number of active coronavirus cases in the country has been steadily decreasing over the last 15 days. In the last 24 hours, 4,22,426 people have recovered from the disease. This is the highest recovery rate ever recorded in the country. Currently, there are 33,53,765 active cases in India.
There are currently eight states in the country where more than 10,000 COVID-19 cases are reported every day. The majority of Indian states are currently under full or partial lockdown. Meanwhile, the national capital saw a significant decrease in COVID-19 cases, with only 3,846 new cases recorded in the last 24 hours. This is the lowest daily cases reported in Delhi since April 5. The capital city’s death rate has also declined.
