Indian chess prodigy Gukesh Dommaraju, aged 18, has achieved a historic milestone by becoming the youngest-ever World Chess Champion. He clinched the title on December 12, 2024, after a decisive victory against China’s Ding Liren in the 14th and final game of the championship. Gukesh is only the second Indian to hold this prestigious title, following the legendary five-time champion Viswanathan Anand.
Global figures like Tesla CEO Elon Musk and Google CEO Sundar Pichai celebrated Gukesh’s achievement on social media, with Musk offering a succinct “Congratulations!” and Pichai praising the young champion’s journey as one of “grit and glory.”
Born on May 29, 2006, in Chennai, India, Gukesh displayed an early aptitude for chess. The son of Dr. Rajinikanth, an ENT surgeon, and Dr. Padma, a microbiologist, he began playing at the age of seven. His talent quickly shone, winning the U9 Asian School Chess Championship in 2015 and the U12 World Youth Chess Championship in 2018. That same year, he dominated the Asian Youth Chess Championships, earning five gold medals across rapid, blitz, and classical formats. At 12 years, 7 months, and 17 days, he became the third-youngest Grandmaster in history.
This latest triumph solidifies Gukesh’s position as a global chess icon and a source of immense pride for India, underscoring his exceptional talent, determination, and focus.
