The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed on Monday that the October-November T20 World Cup will be held in the UAE.
The World Cup was originally scheduled to be held in India, but due to public health and safety concerns raised by COVID-19, BCCI President Sourav Ganguly announced the board’s decision to host in the UAE.
“We have officially intimated the ICC that the T20 World Cup can be shifted to the United Arab Emirates. The details are being chalked out,” Ganguly said. However, the BCCI will remain the hosts of the mega-event.
The 16-team tournament is expected to begin on October 17, two days after the completion of the Indian Premier League (IPL). The IPL, which was suspended after playing half of its matches in India due to the second wave of COVID-19, will also be held in Dubai beginning in September.
It is known that the first round of the T20 World Cup will be played in the UAE and Oman, with eight teams – Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Ireland, Netherlands, Scotland, Namibia, Oman, and Papua New Guinea – battling for qualifying in the Super 12s.
The next round will begin on October 24, with 12 teams divided into two groups, followed by two semi-finals and the final on November 14.
