30% of affordable housing prioritised for ‘locals’ in Dún Laoghaire

Dún Laoghaire: Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council has decided to give 30% preference to local residents in affordable housing. The county council has decided to give those who have lived in the area for eight years special consideration. The scheme stipulates that those who purchase new homes must stay for at least eight years. Those who can prove that they have spent eight years in this area, even if they get a house, are not required to stay here.

The council has published the eligibility criteria for purchasing homes through the government-backed Affordable Housing Purchase Scheme. It states that local authorities will have the discretion to allocate 30 percent of houses if there are more applicants than available houses in the scheme.

Dún Laoghaire–Rathdown is the place with the highest house prices in the country. The Dunlaoghaire area is home to approximately 5,000 Indians. The majority of them arrived in the last five years. It is expected that there will be an influx of demand once the affordable housing projects are also completed. The council intends to sell 850 houses in various new estates in the local authority area by 2026.

At the same time, there is concern that the new norm will deny opportunities to employees who have come to live and work in the last eight years. It is also stated that if this standard is implemented, such people will be excluded from the scheme. Therefore, there has been a demand to change the conditions in a way that will benefit them too.
