Dublin: Over the Bank Holiday weekend, Ireland saw a concerning surge in speeding violations, with approximately 3,000 drivers caught exceeding the limit, notably one driver clocking an alarming 228 km/h on a stretch of road where a far lower speed is mandated, specifically in Balgatheran on the M1 in Drogheda, Louth.
Further instances of excessive speeding were recorded, including a driver travelling at 153 km/h in a 100 km/h zone on the N61 at Mayo, and another at 148 km/h in an 80 km/h zone on the R339 at Glenlivet Oranmore in Galway. Shockingly, two individuals were nabbed speeding at a staggering 143 km/h in a 60 km/h zone on the R700 at Knockavilla, New Ross, Wexford.
Tragically, this rash of speeding offences coincided with a grim toll on the roads, resulting in two fatalities and 12 individuals suffering serious injuries over the same period. These incidents add to a troubling statistic, with 21 lives lost in road accidents since the start of the new year.
During the period from February 1st to 6th, law enforcement also took action against various other dangerous driving behaviours, including the arrest of 110 individuals for using mobile phones while driving and 61 for failing to wear seat belts. Moreover, over 100 learners’ permit holders were apprehended for driving unaccompanied by a licenced driver, while 420 vehicles were impounded for operating without proper insurance or tax.
In response to these alarming trends, the Gardaí issued a plea to drivers to exercise caution, urging them to reduce speed and adapt their driving to suit the prevailing conditions. Additionally, they reiterated the importance of wearing seat belts and refraining from using mobile devices while behind the wheel, underscoring the critical role responsible driving plays in safeguarding lives on our roads.
