42 workers at Co Down seafood plant tested positive for COVID-19

DOWN: Some 42 employees at a seafood plant operating in County Down tested positive for coronavirus yesterday. Kilkeel Seafoods, which employs about 250 people, has temporarily closed and will be disinfected soon.

Mobile testing units have been active in the Kilkeel area for the past two weeks following the identification of the Delta COVID-19 variant. Delta variant is currently the dominant strain in Northern Ireland and the UK.

Sources close to the company said the decision to test all workers as a precautionary measure came after a few workers at the plant were confirmed to have COVID-19 last week.

They said the company had strictly adhered to the COVID protocol and had taken all possible safety measures.

“It’s hugely concerning that over 40 staff have tested positive for Covid-19 at Kilkeel Seafoods,” said South Down MP Chris Hazzard.
