A Brazilian man arrested in connection with stabbing death of a teenage football player in Dublin

DUBLIN: The main suspect in the stabbing that killed 16-year-old Josh Dunne in Dublin’s north inner city after 9pm on Tuesday has been arrested.

According to Gardai, Josh and his friends saw two men attacking a 23-year-old man who allegedly stole a delivery cyclist’s bike on East Road, East Wall.

Gardai said that Josh and a 16-year-old friend were stabbed three times each and critically injured while trying to calm down the incident.

Both were taken to a Mater Hospital in Dublin following the incident, but Josh’s life could not be saved.

Detectives from the Store Street Garda Station have arrested a Brazilian national living in the north inner city who is the main suspect in the attack. It is learned that the officers are not looking for anyone else in connection with the murder.

“This incident escalated from the alleged theft of a bike to a fatal stabbing. The teenager killed had absolutely nothing to do with the initial incident and appears to have been trying to calm the situation when he was stabbed,” a senior source said.

Football clubs paid tribute to the teenager who played for a variety of popular clubs, including Dundee United and Bohemians FC.
