A powerful 6.8-magnitude earthquake struck Morocco Friday night, killing nearly 300 people 

Morocco: An earthquake killed 296 people in Morocco, a North African country. The 6.8-magnitude earthquake caused extensive damage in capital Rabat and surrounding areas. The quake occurred shortly after 11 p.m. local time (11 a.m. Irish time). Many people were injured and taken to hospitals. The rescue operation is currently underway, according to officials.

This is the preliminary death toll, with 153 injured, the country’s interior ministry said. A local official told the Reuters news agency that most of the deaths occurred in hard-to-reach mountainous areas.

According to reports by Reuters, people were in danger or fled their homes in Rabat, 350 kilometres north of Ighil, a mountainous area with small farming villages, is about 70 km (40 miles) southwest of Marrakech.

The quake was also felt in neighbouring Algeria, but there was no damage or casualties, according to the Algerian Civil Defence.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences to those who lost their lives in the earthquake in Morocco. The Prime Minister expressed his condolences through his official X handle. He also noted that India is ready to provide all possible assistance to Morocco.
