Dublin: Cabinet will consider the All-Island Strategic Rail Report today, which recommends introducing new systems with the goal of having train services between Ireland’s major cities last at least one hour. In addition, the new report suggests at least one train every two hours between smaller urban centres.
The proposal also includes new rail lines for passengers and freight in the Galway, Sligo, and Letterkenny regions of the country.
Most of the demands, which are more than 25 years old, can be implemented before 2030, the report said.
It has recommendations for commissioning, including Limerick to Foynes and the South Wexford railway line between Waterford and Rosslare Europort.
There are also plans to build a new rail line around Dublin Port.
It is also suggested that the Claremorris-Athenry line, as well as the Antrim-Lisburn line via Belfast International Airport, be reopened.
