Accommodation for nurses near hospitals, New National Children’s Hospital to set an example

Dublin: HSE Explores Accommodation Options for New National Children’s Hospital Staff.

The Health Service Executive (HSE) is reportedly in the process of devising a plan to provide convenient accommodation for personnel who are expected to work at the forthcoming National Children’s Hospital in Dublin. Given the ongoing housing crisis in the city and its environs, the HSE is considering this strategy to address potential staff housing concerns.

As part of this initiative, the HSE is contemplating the possibility of utilizing buildings that will be vacated by the existing children’s hospital in Crumlin, thus repurposing them to serve as accommodation for the future workforce of the new children’s hospital. The highly anticipated National Children’s Hospital is slated to open its doors in 2025, with current anxieties revolving around where its staff will find suitable living arrangements.

Children’s Health Ireland (CHI), the entity responsible for overseeing the new hospital, has proactively embarked on the quest to secure housing solutions for their personnel. The move has received commendation from Health Minister Stephen Donnelly, who recognised the historical practice of hospitals offering on-site accommodation to healthcare professionals. This tradition had gradually faded away over the past two decades.

The HSE holds a substantial portfolio of vacant properties across the country, and there have been calls, including a petition from Shalbin Joseph, a member of the NMBI Board of Directors, urging authorities to develop affordable housing for HSE employees on these properties.

As the new children’s hospital will require the relocation of many staff members from other children’s hospitals in Dublin, in addition to the recruitment of new personnel, the challenge of securing housing for the expanded workforce remains a priority. In response to this issue, CHI has taken proactive measures to facilitate housing solutions for the incoming staff in Dublin.
