DUBLIN: Indications are that the period of adaptation of nurses seeking employment in Ireland from countries including India may be extended. Experts also recommend that a training program be conducted in Ireland a few weeks before the aptitude test prepared by the RCSC for the Irish Board of Nursing.
The Irish Board of Nursing (NMBI) has decided that Indian nurses will be able to register and work in Ireland as soon as they pass a nursing course if they have a certain score in the IELTS or OET.
But the NMBI may take steps to ensure that foreign nurses enter the job market more responsibly and competently. The suggestion for a short-term course before the test is based on the growing number of those who fail the aptitude test prepared by the RCSC. The RCSC, which now serves only as an examination center, may also take on the responsibility of preparing candidates for the test.
The Irish Board of Nursing has now repealed the requirement to have at least one year of experience in the five years prior to applying for a nursing job in Ireland.
However, the NMBI is considering extending the current six – week adaptation program to a few more weeks and allowing aptitude test candidates to travel to Ireland for a few weeks of training before the test.
New steps may be announced along with guidelines for implementing the new decision to register and work in Ireland as soon as the nursing course is passed. The NMBI has made a significant decision to refrain from submitting evidence of training for the past 12 years – residency of practice and proof of active registration in another country.
Candidates will have to pay an application fee of 350 Euros. With the update of NMBI’s site, board officials say you can apply for registration through MyNMBI, but it may take at least a few months to complete the process. NMBI will later announce the date on which applications will be accepted online.
