Air India Considers Modernising Female Cabin Crew Uniforms After Six Decades of Sarees

Air India is reportedly considering a modernised uniform for its female cabin crew, marking a potential departure from the traditional sarees that have been the standard attire for flight attendants for the past six decades. According to a report by Hindustan Times, the airline is preparing to unveil new uniforms in November, and celebrated designer Manish Malhotra has been entrusted with the task of overseeing this transformation.

While Manish Malhotra refrained from commenting due to a non-disclosure agreement (NDA), sources familiar with the matter disclosed that alternative traditional options like churidars are being explored. However, it’s worth noting that sarees may not be entirely phased out, as the new uniform might incorporate ready-to-wear sarees as one of the options on offer. This decision is still pending finalisation by the airline’s management.

This potential uniform makeover comes on the heels of Air India’s recent rebranding efforts, following its acquisition by the Tata Group. The airline unveiled a new logo, a modern reinterpretation of its iconic Maharaja mascot, featuring a sleeker design and a fresh colour scheme of red, white, and purple. The rebranded logo, known as ‘The Vista,’ signifies the airline’s commitment to limitless possibilities, progressiveness, and a bold, confident vision for the future, according to Tata Sons Chairman N Chandrasekaran.

The new logo replaces the previous one, which featured a red swan adorned with the distinctive orange Konark Chakra. Air India’s ongoing transformation aims to reflect the evolving nature of the airline and its readiness to embrace change and innovation.
