Aitana Bonmati and Lionel Messi win top awards at the 2023 Ballon d’Or

Lionel Messi, the star player of Inter Miami CF, has clinched the Ballon d’Or for an unprecedented eighth time, surpassing all competition, including Manchester City’s prolific striker, Erling Haaland. Messi’s achievement was primarily propelled by his instrumental role in leading Argentina to World Cup victory last year. This milestone also marks the first time a Major League Soccer (MLS) player has claimed the prestigious award. In a touching moment, former Manchester United player and co-owner of Inter Miami, David Beckham, had the honour of presenting Messi with the award in Paris.

Erling Haaland, who delivered a remarkable performance by netting 52 goals during the 2022–23 season as Manchester City secured the Treble, secured the second position in the Ballon d’Or voting. He was also honoured with the Gerd Muller Trophy, recognising him as the best striker of the year.

Before Messi received his accolade, the Ballon d’Or Féminin was awarded to Aitana Bonmatí, the accomplished midfielder from Barcelona and the Spanish national team. Her incredible achievements included helping Barcelona secure Liga F and the Champions League in the previous season, followed by leading Spain to World Cup glory in the summer.

In addition to these notable awards, Emiliano Martinez, Messi’s compatriot from Argentina and an exceptional goalkeeper, was the recipient of the Yashin Trophy, acknowledging him as the best goalkeeper in the world. Meanwhile, Jude Bellingham, the talented young midfielder from England and Real Madrid, was presented with the Kopa Trophy, recognising him as the world’s top player under the age of 21.

During his acceptance speech, Lionel Messi took a moment to pay tribute to his fellow countryman, the legendary Diego Maradona, on what would have been his 63rd birthday. Messi warmly extended his wishes, acknowledging Maradona’s profound impact on the world of football, saying, “Wherever you are, Diego, happy birthday. This goes also to you.” This heartfelt gesture resonated with the football community, honouring the memory of the 1986 World Cup icon, who passed away on November 2020.
