Madrid: According to a new report by the General Nursing Council (CGE), Spain requires approximately 95,000 nurses to reach the European average.
Spain currently employs 330,000 nurses at a rate of 625 nurses per 100,000 inhabitants, which is significantly lower than the European average of 827.
CGE President Florentino Pérez Raya warned that the health sector is facing a major challenge due to the lack of adequate nurses in the country and that if patients do not receive proper treatment, there will be many problems, including increased mortality.
The report also points out that the availability of nurses in Spain varies greatly by region. The rate in Murcia is 463 nurses per 100,000 inhabitants, which puts additional strain on working nurses and creates a situation in which patients do not receive proper care, according to the CGE president.
Apart from Spain, only Italy, Slovakia, Hungary, Bulgaria, Greece, and Latvia have a nurse shortage in Europe.
Statistics also show that in Spain, a nurse’s caseload is often two to three times that of the European average.
