An Garda Síochána Launches 24-Hour “Slow Down” Speed Enforcement Operation on September 2

Dublin: A 24-hour national speed enforcement operation, “Slow Down” supported by the Road Safety Authority, will take place on September 2, 2024. The operation, which is running from 7 a.m. today until 7 a.m. tomorrow, is to highlight the dangers of speeding and improve compliance with speed limits. On the first two hours of National Slow Down Day, Gardaí recorded 25 speeding violations out of 9,410 vehicles checked. Notable offences included speeds of 75 km/h in a 50 km/h zone on Rochestown Road, Cork, and 74 km/h in a 50 km/h zone on the R661 Holycross, Tipperary. Additionally, a motorist was clocked at 111 km/h in a 100 km/h zone on the N3 Lisgrea, Virginia, Cavan.

As of August 30th, 125 road fatalities have been reported in Ireland, a slight increase from the previous year. Gardaí emphasise the importance of adhering to speed limits, especially with increased school traffic.

In 2023, road traffic fatalities rose to 184, up from 154 in 2022, representing a 19% increase. By the end of June 2024, over 70,000 fixed charge notices had been issued for speeding, averaging more than 375 detections per day.
