An investigation has been launched into the incident in which George Nkencho was shot dead in front of his mother and siblings

The Garda Ombudsman has launched an investigation into the shooting death of a 27-year-old man in front of his mother and siblings in Clooney, Blanchardstown.

George Nkencho, a Nigerian national, was shot dead by Gardas yesterday afternoon.

Following reports of a man armed with a knife at Eurospar shop in Hartstown, Armed Garda fled the scene after trying to apprehend George, who fled to his own home near the scene. Thus, gardai opened fire on George Nkencho, who had entered the backyard.

Garda claimed to have been shot three times in the leg. Nkencho, who was shot and bled, was rushed to James Connolly hospital, but died earlier.

A group of about a dozen guards arrived at Eurospar at 12.15pm and opened fire on Nkencho at 12.45pm.

Garda’s explanation was that he was shot because he tried to stab Garda with a knife.

Hundreds of blacks and human rights activists have been protesting in the Blanchardstown area since noon yesterday. Hundreds of people arrived at the scene and offered tearful prayers to Nkencho.

Protesters marched in front of the Blanchardstown Garda station, chanting slogans denying Nchenko justice. In the evening, hundreds of people, including Nigerians from the West, marched through the Blanchardstown shopping center.
