Anne O’Connor Appointed as New HSE Chief Executive

Dublin: Anne O’Connor, a senior executive at health insurer VHI, has been appointed as the new Chief Executive Officer of the Health Service Executive (HSE), succeeding Bernard Gloster, who announced his retirement earlier this year.

Ms O’Connor is an occupational therapist by profession and brings extensive leadership experience within the Irish health system. She previously served as HSE Chief Operations Officer and National Director of Mental Health, and also held the role of Interim Chief Executive of the HSE in 2018.

She played a central leadership role during the COVID-19 pandemic from March 2020 and was later instrumental in managing the response to the major cyberattack on the health service in 2021.

In August 2022, Ms O’Connor was appointed Managing Director of VHI Health and Wellbeing, a subsidiary of the VHI Group, and has since been a member of the senior leadership team of the State-owned health insurer.

Ms O’Connor holds a Diploma in Occupational Therapy from the University of Liverpool, an MSc in Occupational Therapy from Trinity College Dublin, and an MSc in Management Practice from University College Cork (Irish Management Institute).
