DUBLIN: Taoiseach Micheál Martin has said the government will make a comprehensive announcement next week on easing COVID-19 restrictions. Indications are that hairdressers and barbers, retail, religious services and adult-level non-contact sport will have consideration.
The Taoiseach expressed his concern for people’s well-being and the need for young people to get out and engage in their sport of choice.
Mr. Martin said he would look into the reopening of hotels and guest houses in June. Restrictions on public worship may also be eased next month. But he did not specify a date for this.
The number of people allowed to attend funerals will be increased from 10 to 25 next Monday, the Taoiseach confirmed at a Fianna Fáil parliamentary party meeting.
He said that antigen testing will be conducted this summer to ensure that students return to campus for third level education.
Meanwhile, Tánaiste Leo Varadkar said he cannot give any indication about the lifting of inter-county restrictions in June.
Announcement on end of lockdown next week
Taoiseach Martin has confirmed that the government will announce its decision to end the lockdown next week.
The Taoiseach told the Dáil that the Cabinet will publish a blueprint for this by mid-next week, including when hairdressers, gyms, pubs, and non-essential retail will reopen.
Mr. Martin added that the goal of the current restrictions is to bring the country to a point where more exemptions are allowed. He said the final decision would be subject to recommendations from the NPHET.
