Anti-immigrants set fire to proposed refugee centre in Dublin, PM says reprehensible

Dublin: In a distressing incident that unfolded in Thorncastle Street, Ringsend, Dublin, anti-refugee sentiments escalated to an alarming level when individuals deliberately set fire to accommodations designated for refugees. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, but the shocking incident sent shockwaves throughout the entire country. Swift response from six fire engines, the Garda, and the Dublin Fire Brigade managed to bring the fire under control, although the area was left shrouded in smoke.

The incident, perceived as premeditated, prompted widespread protests condemning the act. Simultaneously, anti-immigrant activists callously celebrated the fire on social media platforms. Gardaí have initiated a thorough investigation into the matter.

Adding complexity to the situation, the Integration Department asserted in mid-December that no decision had been made to allocate the building for refugees. This stance remained unchanged even after the fire, as reiterated by the department.

The Dublin Region Homeless Executive (DRHE) vehemently condemned the arson, emphasising the impact on both homeless individuals and asylum seekers.

Political leaders, including Prime Minister Leo Varadkar, expressed deep concern over the incident. Varadkar, acknowledging the relief that no casualties occurred, emphasised the ongoing Garda investigation to determine the cause of the fire. He underscored the commitment to bringing the perpetrators to justice and urged anyone with information to cooperate with the authorities. The Prime Minister clarified that the building was intended for emergency accommodation.

Justice Minister Helen McEndy echoed these sentiments, deeming the act a serious crime. She emphasised the unwavering commitment to taking strict action against those responsible, asserting that no one has the right to endanger public safety or destroy public property. The nation collectively awaits the outcome of the investigation, hopeful that justice will be served in the face of such a reprehensible incident.
