Anura Kumara Dissanayake Leads Sri Lanka’s Presidential Election with 53% of Early Votes

Anura Kumara Dissanayake, leader of the Marxist-leaning Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) and the National People’s Power (NPP) alliance, emerged as the frontrunner in Sri Lanka’s presidential election, securing 53% of the early votes. This election is the first since the 2022 mass protests that ousted former President Gotabaya Rajapaksa. Opposition leader Sajith Premadasa and current President Ranil Wickremesinghe trail behind.

Dissanayake, 55, has gained popularity for his strong anti-corruption stance and pro-poor policies. His role became prominent during the 2022 economic crisis, where his party actively supported the mass protest movement, Aragalaya, advocating for broader reforms and social justice.
