DUBLIN: Apple is developing a satellite-assisted project to help rural areas with low network coverage. According to an Apple analyst, the company plans to use satellites to solve the villagers’ internet coverage problem with the iPhone 13, which will be released next month.
Ming-Chi Kuo, one of Apple’s most reliable analysts, said that the technology was incorporated into “low earth orbit” satellite technology. He said the new iPhone 13 will have a Qualcomm chip that can be used to connect to satellite communications.
Features of the iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 Pro models include updated ultra wide lenses, a high-end screen, a larger battery, and a smaller notch. Satellite phones, such as those made by Inmarsat, Iridium or Thuraya, typically have long aerials. This physical feature is unlikely to be considered by Apple in its industrial design.
However, it is not clear whether the new service will be available in Ireland. It is thought to be limited to a handful of operators in the US. Some point out that the cellular Apple Watch is still not supported by any Irish mobile operator.
Qualcomm chip will give greater access
Smartphone chips that can connect to satellites are becoming more widespread. A separate Qualcomm chip, set to be launched next year, is expected to give phone manufacturers greater access to satellite calls, texts, and data.
Satellite services for calls and texts are very expensive. It usually costs more than 50 euros per month. Satellite phones are currently mainly used by emergency services and airlines. These services are also used by wealthy adventurers crossing the oceans or climbing remote mountain ranges.
There has been a huge increase in the launch of low-orbit satellites in recent years. Elon Musk’s Starlink satellite broadband system is one of the best known LEO systems. It offers 100 MB of broadband in rural areas where other types of broadband are not available.
