Indian photojournalist Danish Siddiqui was killed while covering a clash in Kandahar, Afghanistan, on Friday. The Pulitzer Prize-winning Danish has been reporting tensions in Kandahar’s Spin Boldak district for the past few days.
He was killed while documenting a clash between Afghan security forces and Taliban fighters as part of his assignment embedded with the Afghan Special Forces.
Indian Ambassador to Afghanistan Farid Mamundzay expressed his condolences for Danish Siddiqui’s death on Twitter.
Danish began his career as a Television news journalist and later switched to photojournalism. He worked as a photojournalist for the international news agency Reuters and as a reporter for the India Today Group from 2008 to 2010.
In 2018, Danish Siddiqui and Adnan Abidi of Reuters jointly won the Pulitzer Prize for Feature Photography for their coverage of the Rohingya Refugee Crisis. It was the first time an Indian had received the Pulitzer Prize.
Danish was recognised as a brave journalist, and some of his major works included covering the conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq, the Rohingya refugee crisis, Hong Kong protests, and the earthquakes in Nepal.
Taliban fighters had captured the border area on Wednesday. Danish Siddiqui was covering the situation with the Afghan Special Forces for the past few days. He regularly shared pictures from Afghanistan on social media. Danish last tweeted images from Afghanistan on July 13.
