Belfast’s New £350 Million Grand Central Station to Open This Weekend, Marking Major Upgrade for Bus and Rail Services

Belfast’s new £350 million Grand Central Station, a major public transport hub, opens this weekend, marking a significant upgrade for bus and rail services across Northern Ireland and the island. The first service on Sunday will be a cross-border bus to Dublin, with rail services set to follow after further testing of the new track and signalling. Originally estimated at £300 million, costs rose due to inflation linked to the Ukraine war and COVID-19 disruptions. The station, built largely by Northern Irish firms, will enhance connectivity across Northern Ireland and support a new hourly train service between Belfast and Dublin, starting later this year with €25m support from the Irish government. A dispute over the use of bilingual Irish-English signage remains ongoing. Translink’s CEO, Chris Conway, called the station a “world-class facility” and a “game-changer” for regional transport.
