British Airways unveils new collection

British Airways has unveiled a new uniform designed by British fashion designer and tailor Ozwald Boateng OBE, which will be worn by more than 30,000 employees beginning in Spring 2023.

The collection includes a tailored three-piece suit for men with normal and slim-fit trousers, as well as dress, skirt, and trouser choices for ladies, as well as a trendy jumpsuit—an airline first. A tunic and hijab option has also been designed for the global carrier.

Boateng took inspiration for the new collection from the airline and its employees. All of the tailored outfits include a jacquard fabric with a variant of the airline’s signature speedmarque.

Since 2018, Boateng has been working on the collection. He observed various airport positions to see how the uniform needed to function for each job while maintaining a modern, trendy design with high-quality, resilient fabrics that are easy to care for.

More than 1,500 personnel from throughout the airline participated in 50 workshops to ensure the fit of the clothing, ranging from design workshops to prototype feedback and garment testing.

Emma Carey, a British Airways cabin crew member who participated in the secret uniform trials, stated, “It’s been an honour and a duty to help test the new uniform and put it through its paces at 35,000 feet to ensure it’s fit for purpose, knowing that thousands of my colleagues rely on me.” It was fantastic to see that changes were implemented in response to our suggestions.

Sean Doyle, chairman and CEO of British Airways, stated, “Our uniform is an iconic representation of our brand, something that will take us into the future, representing the finest of modern Britain and assisting us in providing our passengers with a fantastic, original British service… “We wanted to produce a uniform line that our employees would be happy to wear, and we are convinced that we have done it with the aid of over 1,500 colleagues.”

Engineers and ground operations agents will be the first to wear the new uniform, beginning in spring 2023. All cabin staff, pilots, and check-in agents of British Airways will change from their present uniform to the new one in summer 2023. When employees receive their new uniforms, they will give in their old ones, which will be donated to charity or repurposed to make toys, tablet holders, and other goods, with a number of items donated to the airline’s museum.
