Budget 2021: 500 million for construction of 9,500 new community housing

The Irish government says it will spend 500 500 million to build 9,500 community homes next year to support the housing sector in Ireland.

Public Expenditure and Reforms Minister Michael McGrath, who announced the expenditure in the 2021 budget, said the government should place more emphasis on building low-cost community housing directly.

He added that the sustainable building plan would accelerate overall housing construction in Ireland.

McGrath said the budget would provide 2. 2.4 billion for 15,000 housing assistance payments (HAP) and 800 rental housing schemes.

The announcement comes a week after it was confirmed that only 725 community homes had been built in the first half of this year.

Covid had made a huge impact on the construction sector, said Housing Minister Darragh O’Brien.

Meanwhile, opposition political leaders said the government’s social housing schemes have not reached their targets in the last few years.

McGrath, meanwhile, said he would implement a 110 million low-cost housing project next year and distribute more than 2,000 low-cost homes on private and public land.
