Approximately 10,000 people have been told to evacuate a seaside city in the Canadian province of Quebec, marking the latest evacuation in the country’s weeks of wildfires.
The order was issued for Sept-Iles inhabitants on Friday after a neighbouring fire “advanced very quickly” overnight, according to the city’s mayor, Steeve Beaupre, who declared a local state of emergency.
The ferocity of this year’s early wildfire season in Canada, according to Bill Blair, the country’s minister of public safety, has been “unprecedented,” with more than 1,826 flames scorching 2.7 million hectares (6.7 million acres) of land.
More than 210 fires were still blazing across Canada on Friday, with around 29,000 people evacuated before the most recent order in Quebec, he added.
Wildfires are more frequent in Canada’s west, but blazes along the Atlantic coast have highlighted the country’s harsher weather in recent years as global temperatures rise.
Approximately 200 houses were demolished and almost 20,000 people were evacuated in Nova Scotia, where locals were led on tours of the devastation in the province’s main city, Halifax, on Friday.
