Ottawa: Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has announced a snap election on April 28, citing the need for a strong mandate to address the economic challenges posed by U.S. tariffs under President Donald Trump.
Originally scheduled for October 20, the election has been moved forward following Trump’s escalating trade threats and the resignation of former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. Carney, who assumed leadership of the Liberal Party in January, aims to capitalise on its resurgence in recent elections.
Carney: A Strong Mandate Needed to Defend Canada’s Economy
In his announcement, Carney emphasised the urgency of protecting Canada’s economy and national interests:
“President Trump’s unjustified trade actions and threats to our sovereignty are creating a major economic crisis. There is still much work to be done to secure Canada’s future. We need a clear, strong, and positive mandate to invest in Canada, build Canada, and unite Canada.”
Following Carney’s request, the Governor General—who represents King Charles III, Canada’s head of state—approved the dissolution of Parliament, officially triggering the election.
A former central banker with no prior electoral experience, Carney secured the Liberal leadership just two weeks ago by persuading party members that he is the best candidate to challenge Trump’s trade policies.
