Vatican City: Cardinal Robert Prevost, a 69-year-old American prelate from Chicago, has been elected the new head of the Catholic Church and Bishop of Rome. He will assume the papal name Pope Leo XIV.
Cardinal Prevost’s election marks a historic moment, as he becomes one of the few American-born leaders to ascend to the papacy. His election follows the conclave held in the Sistine Chapel, where cardinals from around the world gathered to choose the successor to Pope Francis.
