Cavan: The recent stabbing of a Malayali nurse in Cavan has sparked concern among the Indian community in Ireland, but the victim has now spoken out, urging media outlets to report responsibly and avoid spreading unnecessary fear.
The nurse, originally from Tripunithura in Kerala and working at Cavan General Hospital, described the incident as a deeply traumatic experience that was later misrepresented by sections of the media.
A Routine Evening Turns Violent
After completing an extended on-call shift, the nurse returned home exhausted. Later that evening, he stepped out to a nearby store, only to encounter three young men who allegedly targeted him with racial abuse.
According to his account, the situation escalated rapidly. Despite attempting to defend himself, he was attacked and stabbed under his left arm with a knife. Severely injured, he managed to seek help and was eventually transported to hospital by a passerby.
He reached the hospital within minutes, where colleagues and medical staff provided urgent treatment, saving his life after hours of intensive care.
“Media Exaggeration Added to Trauma”
While recovering from his injuries, the nurse expressed distress over what he described as sensationalised and inaccurate media coverage. He said some reports were based on incomplete or exaggerated information, creating unnecessary panic among the wider Indian community.
He also recounted being contacted by media representatives while still in a vulnerable condition, including requests for personal details and photographs without proper sensitivity.
The victim stressed that while the incident was serious, it should not be used to portray Ireland as an unsafe country. He noted that isolated incidents can occur anywhere and warned against amplifying fear among thousands of Indian families and students living abroad.
Safety Advisory for Community
Highlighting concerns for Indian students—many of whom may lack strong local support networks—he urged practical precautions:
- Avoid travelling alone, especially at night
- Stay connected with community networks
- Report any incidents promptly to authorities
Authorities, including the An Garda Síochána and the Embassy of India in Ireland, have reportedly strengthened monitoring measures to ensure the safety of Indian nationals.
The survivor concluded with a broader message, urging both media and the public to prioritise accuracy and responsibility. While awareness is important, he said, it should not come at the cost of spreading fear or distorting reality.
His account serves as a reminder that beyond physical recovery, the emotional impact of such incidents can be deepened by how they are portrayed and perceived.
