Changes to Rail Ticket Prices Come into Effect Today

Dublin: Rail ticket prices across Ireland are set to change from today, with fares to certain destinations decreasing while others will see an increase. The changes have sparked mixed reactions from the public. The adjustments follow a major expansion and remapping of the travel zones within the Dublin region.

The previous Short Hop Zone, which extended as far as Balbriggan, has now been replaced by the newly designated Dublin Commuter Zone. This expanded zone covers a 50-kilometre radius around Dublin and now includes Drogheda, Enfield, Kildare Town, and Rathdrum. Passengers travelling within these areas will now be able to use the Leap Card system for their journeys.

Fares Set to Decrease — and Increase

Under the new pricing structure, commuters travelling from Drogheda or Laytown to Dublin’s Connolly Station, who previously paid a single fare of €10.85, will now pay just €6 when using a Leap Card.

Conversely, fares for some shorter routes will increase. Passengers travelling from Skerries or Balbriggan to Connolly Station will now pay €3.90, up from the previous fare of €3.

New Leap Card System Enhancements

The updated zonal system will also introduce a Leap Card tap-on and tap-off system at selected stations. This reform allows rail users to conveniently pay for their journeys using the balance stored in their Leap Card e-wallet, simplifying travel and payment across the expanded commuter network.

Authorities hope these changes will encourage greater public transport use while accommodating the growing number of commuters travelling from further afield into Dublin.
