Church Leaders Call for Peace Amidst Roscrea Protests Over Migrant Settlements

Dublin: Catholic and Church of Ireland bishops from the Diocese of Killaloe intervened as tensions escalated in Roscrea, Tipperary, where approximately 300 people protested against the housing of migrants at the Roscrea Racquet Hall Hotel.

Catholic Bishop Fintan Monahan and Church of Ireland Bishop Michael Burrows issued a joint statement, appealing for calm and peace amidst the escalating and disconcerting protests. The statement characterised the protests against emergency accommodation for refugees as disturbing and saddening.

Highlighting biblical teachings, the bishops underscored the duty of Catholics to assist those in need of shelter. They referenced the journey of Jesus and his family as refugees, fleeing to Egypt shortly after his resurrection, emphasising the biblical imperative to care for strangers and those in need.

“The Irish know better than anyone what it is like to be a stranger in a foreign land,” the statement urged, advocating for an open-minded approach to the challenges posed by the unusual circumstances. The bishops acknowledged concerns about resources and local amenities but stressed the importance of a peaceful response.

Emphasising the impact on vulnerable children and families, the church leaders noted that many refugees come from dire situations, requiring shelter and support. Despite inevitable sacrifices and inconveniences, the bishops urged a compassionate and understanding approach to address the needs of those seeking refuge.

Minister of State Thomas Byrne announced a tentative agreement with the government to allocate the community-owned hotel to Roscrea. Bishops Monahan and Burrows welcomed this positive development as a conciliatory step forward.
