Dublin: As flu cases continue to rise across Ireland, health experts are urging the public to understand the key differences between a common cold and influenza, warning that mistaking flu symptoms for a mild cold can lead to complications if left untreated.
Understanding the Symptoms
Coughing is common to both colds and flu, often accompanied by a sore throat, sneezing, and a runny nose. However, experts note that flu symptoms are typically more severe and include chills, extreme fatigue, body aches, and fever—symptoms that are less common or milder in cases of the common cold.
Recognising these distinctions early can help people seek appropriate care and reduce the risk of further illness.
Immunity Is Key
Health specialists emphasise that a strong immune system is the most effective defence against viral infections. A balanced diet rich in vitamins, minerals, amino acids, and fibre supports immune cell function. Research shows that a Mediterranean-style diet, which includes fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts, seeds, and healthy protein sources, can significantly boost immunity.
Probiotics containing Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium strains have also been shown to support immune health and reduce the severity of infections.
Avoid Smoking and Excess Alcohol
Smoking and excessive alcohol consumption are known to weaken the immune system. Experts warn that consuming five or six alcoholic drinks in one evening can suppress immune function for up to 24 hours. Adequate sleep is equally important, with at least seven hours per night recommended to reduce susceptibility to illness.
Manage Stress and Stay Active
Chronic stress increases levels of cortisol, a hormone that can impair immune function and exacerbate allergies. Mindfulness practices and stress management techniques may help counter these effects.
Moderate physical activity—such as brisk walking or dancing—can strengthen immunity. However, prolonged or intense exercise without sufficient rest may have the opposite effect, underscoring the need for balance.
Vaccination and Preventive Measures
Vaccination remains a crucial tool in preventing severe flu. Experts also recommend basic preventive measures, including regular handwashing, wearing masks in crowded or indoor settings, and maintaining good hygiene, to reduce the spread of both colds and flu.
Health authorities advise anyone experiencing persistent or severe symptoms to seek medical advice promptly.
