DUBLIN: The number of daily cases in Ireland has exceeded 500 for the first time in the last two weeks. The Department of Health has confirmed 529 new COVID-19 cases in Ireland.
The rise is mainly due to the increasing number of COVID-19 cases in Limerick. Health officials have expressed concern over the recent spike in case numbers in Limerick. In the past two weeks, more than 800 cases have been reported here.
Meanwhile, the public health officials has said that 86 COVID-19 patients are in hospital, with 28 in intensive care units.
Data on the number of people who have died from COVID-19, as well as case numbers by county, have not been published since the HSE and the Department of Health were subjected to a cyber-attack.
The Department also said that daily case numbers may alter due to future data validation.
HSE CEO Paul Reid confirmed yesterday that 2.9 million COVID-19 vaccines have been administered in Ireland. Over two million adults (53%) have received a first dose, while 25% have received a second dose, he added.
Meanwhile, the Minister of Health has confirmed that the duration between the first and second doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine will be reduced from 12 weeks to eight weeks. The decision was made in response to the National Immunisation Advisory Committee’s (NIAC) recommendation.
