Constituency reorganisation in Ireland could take place today, increasing the number of TDs

Dublin: The Constituency Redistricting Review Report, which will officially announce the decision to increase the number of TDs in Ireland, will be published today. Today, there may be proposals to add at least 11 new TDs to the Parliament.

It is certain that there will be changes in the boundaries of constituencies. The independent committee will also announce its decision to introduce new constituencies today.

The announcement made today could have a significant impact on the electoral fortunes of sitting TDs and candidates.

After each census, there is a review of Dáil constituencies, but with Ireland’s population at a record high of 5.1 million, this redraw will bring the biggest changes in decades.
The commission is bound by the constitutional provision of one TD for every 20,000–30,000 people.

The Oireachtas has proposed that the number of TDs be increased from 160 to between 171 and 181.

However, to meet the requirement of one TD per 30,000 people, at least 12 TDs will have to be newly elected.
