Dublin: Could the city go car-free in the next ten years? According to experts, the events and experiences of the previous 12 months can have a significant impact on our lives.
Experts predict that the backdrop of pandemics and changing global environmental conditions will transform cities such as Dublin and Cork as people abandon cars in favour of e-scooters and e-bikes.
Paul Hogan, e-mobility business development lead at ESB, predicts that e-mobility hubs will be in place on the outskirts of Dublin and Cork in just 5–10 years. These will keep private vehicles out of the city centre. Commuters will drive their electric vehicles to one of these hubs in the future. Then plug in to charge. Otherwise, the journey will continue on an e-bike or e-scooter. Paul says the future of transportation will be electric.
The Irish government estimates that by 2030, there will be 1 million electric vehicles on our roads. There will already be more than 1,100 standard and fast charge points across the Irish island. According to Eric Wang, CEO of Europe’s leading scooter company, Wind Mobility, micromobility will disrupt private cars in the future and make cities greener and more enjoyable. Mobility devices such as bikes and scooters will account for 70% of traffic in city centres over the next 20–30 years.
In the future, we will have a much lower priority for cars in the city centre. More focus will be on quality utilisation of space and greening.
