COVID-19: Five deaths and 617 further cases confirmed in Ireland

A further 617 COVID-19 cases have been confirmed in Ireland. The health department has reported five new deaths related to the virus.

This brings the total number of confirmed cases in Ireland to 40,703. So far 1,821 deaths have been reported in the country.

The country is currently under Level 3 restrictions.

Of the new cases, 123 are in Dublin, 107 in Cork, 42 in Meath, 36 in Kerry, 35 in Galway and the remaining 274 cases are located across 21 counties. 

Community transmission was identified in 72 of the new cases, while 33% were associated with outbreaks or are close contacts of a confirmed case.

73% of today’s cases are in people under 45 years of age. 310 of the cases reported were in men and 307 were in women.

The Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Tony Holohan said there had been an additional 32 hospitals and 8 ICU admissions in the last 24 hours. He added that the number of patients are increasing day by day and we need to stop the virus spread now.

“NPHET continues to monitor the situation however it is early, individual action that is needed to suppress the virus. Please follow public health advice and do your part to make an impact on the disease,” Mr. Holohan said
