COVID-19 outbreaks identified among students in Galway

GALWAY: A dedicated COVID-19 Student Helpline operates this weekend for NUI Galway students experiencing symptoms. The move follows reports of coronavirus outbreaks among students in the Galway city.

Dr. Breda Smyth, Director of Public Health in the West, said that the nature of transmission means many students may have been exposed to the virus.

Galway-Mayo IT (GMIT) has told its Galway-based students to take a test if they think they may have been infected or exposed to the virus. Meanwhile, NUIG students with COVID-19 symptoms were asked to contact their GP or the student health unit doctor.

Dr. Smyth said if there is anyone on your social network who has recently been COVID positive, you will be considered as close contacts if you have connected with them.

A total of 788 new cases were confirmed in the country yesterday while 61 cases were confirmed in Galway. Meanwhile, 139 cases were confirmed on Saturday.

GMIT’s COVID Officer had sent emails to all students living in Galway about the virus outbreak among Galway students.
