Croatia defeated Morocco to clinch third spot in Qatar

Croatia finished third in Qatar after defeating Morocco 2-1 in the FIFA World Cup 2022 play-off. Croatia finished third in the World Cup for the second year in a row after finishing second in Russia four years ago.
This is Croatia’s third top-three finish; they also finished third in the 1998 edition, defeating the Netherlands with a similar scoreline of 2-1.

Croatia claimed the lead in the seventh minute of the third-place play-off at Khalifa International Stadium with a flurry of goals. Josko Gvardiol opened the scoring with a spectacular header following a fantastic set-piece play. But it only took Morocco less than two minutes to tie the score, with Achraf Dar scoring in the ninth minute.

Croatia won in the 42nd minute, when Mislav Orsic scored a spectacular goal shortly before halftime. The 2018 runners-up maintained their lead in a thrilling second half that saw both teams create a handful of decent chances.
