Letterkenny: Ireland is in shock following the deaths of three people in an explosion at a fuel station in Creaslow, Donegal. The accident involved many people, including schoolchildren. Those in the education department indicated that the death toll could rise today. Former Education Minister Joe McHugh and others are leading the rescue effort.
It is estimated that 30 individuals were injured, some critically.
According to Prime Minister Michael Martin, Creaslow was one of the darkest tragedies in Irish history.
The explosion at Applegreen fuel station on Friday afternoon at 3 p.m. stunned Ireland. The explosion was determined to be the result of a gas leak.
Many people were hurt in an unanticipated explosion that occurred without anyone knowing what was going on. They were all evacuated to the hospital from the scene of the crash. Many of the critically injured are struggling for their lives. To save them, all other emergency treatment was halted. The Shandon Hotel in Marblehill ceased accepting overnight reservations and provided free lodging to emergency service personnel.
Emergency services and Gardaí are camped out at the scene. Northern Ireland’s fire and ambulance crews, as well as specialist rescue teams, are on the scene. The Irish Coast Guard Helicopter Rescue 118 and Mulroy Coast Guard teams from Sligo are also on the scene. Roads leading to the region were restricted to allow for rescue operations.
The majority of the injured are being treated at Letterkenny University Hospital, which only accepts the most serious outpatients. The hospital administration has advised that there are many people in the hospital who require immediate treatment, and hence those who arrive with other conditions should seek alternative methods.
The two-story apartment building’s roof fell, resulting in a catastrophic disaster and explosions. Aside from the gas station, there was also a shop, a deli counter, a post office, and a hairdresser’s business at the accident site. It was a busy period, so there were a lot of people at the place. The blast caused the structure to partially collapse, and numerous cars were also damaged.
Under floodlights, emergency personnel worked through the night, warning that there were still individuals trapped within. Those looking for survivors are concerned that the building will collapse further. Local farmers arrived on the scene with their tractors to assist the rescue crew.
Letterkenny Bishop Alan Mc Guckian and local political leaders are on hand to provide people with comfort and leadership. The victims were transferred to hospitals in Letterkenny, Altnagelvin, and Sligo. At around 3.15pm yesterday, a gas leak is thought to have caused the disaster in one of the units adjacent to Applegreen. The subsequent explosion could be heard from miles away.
