Copenhagen: Denmark is set to discontinue its traditional postal service, marking the end of a 400-year-old system. The government agency PostNord has announced that it will cease letter deliveries by the end of 2025, although parcel delivery services will continue. Individuals wishing to send letters will be able to do so as parcels through PostNord’s logistics network, which serves both Denmark and Sweden.
Despite this transition, private courier companies will still offer letter delivery services, according to Danish public broadcaster DR. Additionally, the government has pledged to maintain infrastructure to ensure mail services for remote areas, including Denmark’s small island communities.
As part of the transition, PostNord will remove 1,500 mailboxes across Denmark in the latter half of 2025. The company is also set to refund unused stamps and may reduce its workforce by approximately 1,500 employees, out of its current 4,600 staff members. However, PostNord Sweden will remain unaffected by these changes.
The Decline of Traditional Mail
PostNord attributes the decision to the dramatic decline in letter volumes, which have dropped 90% since 2000. In 2024 alone, letter deliveries fell by over 30% compared to the previous year, due to Denmark’s increasing digitalisation and new postal cost legislation introduced last year.
“This is a very difficult decision,” PostNord Denmark Chief Executive Kim Pedersen said in a press release. “Denmark is becoming more digital, and letter volumes have become too low to sustain traditional postal operations. The letter market is no longer profitable, so we will now focus on parcel delivery.” Pedersen also noted that customers can continue sending letters through PostNord’s parcel shops.
However, the decision has drawn criticism. Danish MP Pelle Dragsted warned on social media that discontinuing letter deliveries could negatively impact Danes living in remote areas who still rely on postal services.
