DUBLIN: Another 35 people died of coronavirus in Ireland yesterday. The health department also confirmed 1,047 new COVID-19 cases yesterday. The number of people in the ICU dropped by seven to 181.
Health officials have appealed to the public that people with COVID-19 symptoms should immediately enter self-isolation and contact their GP immediately.
The Deputy Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Ronan Glynn, made the special request to the public after reports emerged that people were taking three or more days to come forward for testing after symptoms appeared. He reminded that late diagnosis may increase the spread of the disease.
He said that in the last four weeks, COVID outbreaks have occurred in a number of workplaces compared to the end of 2020. The National Public Health Emergency Team (NPHET) warned that the only way to get relief was to reduce the number of cases to less than 1,000 a day.
The number of COVID-19 positive patients at the hospital dropped to 1,239 yesterday. Compared to January figures, COVID outbreaks are down 38%.
As part of infection control or lack of staff, about 600 patients have not been admitted to hospitals. 1,615 public patients are being treated in private hospitals to ease public sector pressure.
Meanwhile, Health Minister Stephen Donnelly said the first batches of AstraZeneca vaccine would arrive this weekend. 21,600 doses will arrive in Ireland in the first phase.
