DUBLIN: Controversy erupts over the death of a dog who was shot dead by a Garda on a house search in Dublin yesterday.
Gardai were looking for a suspect in the Coburg area of Dublin city center. The dog jumped out of the house and was in the process of attacking a garda, when it was shot by an armed officer.
The dog died soon after, although veterinary treatment was provided immediately.
The inspection was carried out by the Coolock Detective Unit and Dublin Metropolitan Region (DMR) Armed Support Unit (ASU).
A 40-year-old homeowner, who is also the owner of the deceased dog, was arrested after finding a drug collection worth around €5,000 in his house.
Gardai said in a statement that: “During the operation an official firearm was discharged when Gardaí were attacked by a dog inside the house. The dog received veterinary treatment but didn’t survive the injuries sustained.”
The crime unit will conduct further investigations at the scene and report the incident to the Garda Síochana Ombudsman Commission, the statement said.
