Dominance of Delta variant in the UK; 12,431 cases of the variant confirmed so far

BELFAST: Public Health England (PHE) has revealed that the vast majority of COVID-19 cases being confirmed in the UK are Delta variant (variant that originated in India).

As of June 2, 12,431 Delta variant cases have been confirmed in the UK, an increase of 79% from the previous week’s total of 6,959. PHE’s risk assessment report states that there is also an increase in hospital admissions when compared to the B117 variation.

Of the 12,431 delta variant cases confirmed so far in the UK, 10,797 are in England, 1,511 in Scotland, 97 in Wales and 26 in Northern Ireland. Figures show that two-thirds of those diagnosed with the ‘Indian variant’ were not vaccinated.

Of the 9,427 delta variant cases confirmed in the UK between February 1 and May 31, 5,172 were unvaccinated. The variant has also been confirmed in a few people who have been vaccinated. There were 140 outbreaks of the variant in schools and 62 in workplaces between January 4 and June 1.

Meanwhile the UK yesterday confirmed a further 5,274 cases of coronavirus, the highest single-day figure since 26 March.
