Donald Trump announces 2024 presidential run

On Tuesday night, Donald Trump announced his candidacy for the Republican presidential nomination in 2024, likely igniting another era of turmoil in US politics, particularly inside his own political party.

“I am tonight announcing my candidacy for president of the United States in order to make America great and glorious again,” Trump said from the ballroom of his private Mar-a-Lago Club in Palm Beach, Florida, where he stood on a stage surrounded by American flags and “Make America Great Again” banners.

He claimed, pledging to defeat Joe Biden in 2024, that “America’s golden age is just ahead.”

It also comes at a time when Trump’s status in the Republican Party has been called into doubt. Trump spoke at Mar-a-Lago a week after his Republican Party failed to achieve the predicted gains in the midterm elections, losing the Senate and appearing to be on course for only a narrow majority in the US House.

In his speech, Trump credited the Republicans’ performance victory in the House, despite the fact that they are likely to secure a much narrower majority than expected. Nancy Pelosi was dismissed. “Isn’t that lovely?” he asked. The Associated Press has yet to predict which party will win a majority.
