Liverpool – A vehicle drove into a crowd during celebrations for Liverpool FC’s Premier League title victory, injuring approximately 50 people, including several children. Of those injured, 27 were taken to hospital, with two individuals reported to be in serious condition.
The incident occurred around 5 p.m. local time on Monday near Water Street, where large crowds had gathered to celebrate the club’s 20th league title. According to emergency services, four people were trapped under the vehicle and were rescued by firefighters.
Police have arrested a 53-year-old British man, believed to be the driver of the car. Authorities confirmed that he is the sole suspect at this time and that the incident is not being treated as terrorism-related.
Footage shared widely on social media shows the vehicle driving into a dense crowd of revellers before attempting to flee. In the aftermath, bystanders were seen confronting the vehicle, with some reportedly damaging it before the driver was apprehended.
Merseyside Police have launched a full investigation. Acting Deputy Chief Constable Jenny Sims emphasised that initial findings indicate the event was an isolated incident. “We believe no other individuals are involved, and we are not treating this as a terrorist incident,” she told reporters.
The incident cast a shadow over what had been a jubilant day in Liverpool, with tens of thousands taking part in a celebratory parade that spanned approximately 10 miles. Team stars including Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk joined fans in marking the club’s milestone achievement.
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer condemned the incident, describing it as “appalling”, and extended his thoughts to those injured and their families. Emergency services remain on high alert as the investigation continues.
