Dublin: A new baggage-handling system has been installed at Dublin Airport. The new €200 million system aims to improve bag delivery to and from flights. Dublin operates a fast-track system that delivers luggage to its owner in less time.
This was part of the baggage system’s modernization in accordance with European civil aviation standards. The new system was installed during the peak season of the COVID period.
95% of previous equipment has been replaced. The system now includes updated screening and detection technology. It can detect and clear bag jams, which have long been a problem for airports. As part of this, additional tracking sensors and cameras have been installed.
The new system has an area equivalent to seven GAA pitches and has 14 km long conveyor belts. According to the CEO, once the system is fully operational, the average time it takes a passenger to receive baggage will be the shortest in Europe.
Currently, the average time it takes for a bag to arrive at a passenger is 18 minutes. This has been the case for the past two months. In this regard, the airport CEO points out that the EU average is 40 minutes.
DAA CEO Kenny Jacobs said that a modern baggage system with better security and reliability has been prepared here. The CEO stated that the goal is to prepare the airport for the busy summer season.
