Dublin and Wicklow Bracing for Prolonged Heavy Rain Throughout the Coming Week

Dublin: Severe rainfall is currently causing significant disruptions across the country. The capital city experienced heavy rain in the afternoon, catching many by surprise as the Met Office did not issue a significant warning the previous day. Due to the persistent heavy rain and strong winds that began in the afternoon, an orange alert has been extended for Dublin and Wicklow counties until 8 o’clock this morning, and the rain continues in Dublin this morning.

Weather forecasts indicate that the rain is expected to persist over the next few days. The Meteorological Department has cautioned that Storm Babet, which began on Thursday, may continue to bring strong winds for a few more days.

Despite efforts to mitigate the impact, small pockets of water had formed across the city by late yesterday evening, even though flood gates were raised along the River Dodder. Dublin City Council officials have taken proactive measures to prevent late-night traffic congestion and address potential accidents.

The Flood Assessment Group of Dublin City Council has convened, and additional staff are being deployed to handle flooding-related issues. Sandbags have been strategically placed along vulnerable coastlines and areas, although significant flooding is not anticipated. The situation is under continuous review, as stated by the council.

In response to the heavy rain, Fingal County Council has advised drivers to avoid certain roads. Notably, the R129 between Ballyboughal and Blake’s Cross remained impassable until late yesterday, as did Brook Lane, Rush.

On Friday at midnight, a status-yellow rain warning was issued for Meath and Louth counties. In response to the floods in Cork this week, the government has announced its commitment to providing assistance to those affected. Finance Minister Michael McGrath has confirmed that financial aid will be accessible through a program administered by the Red Cross, with the support becoming available “from next week.” The initial phase of aid will offer 5,000 euros, with the potential for additional assistance of up to 20,000 euros depending on the extent of the damage. The devastating impact of the floods in Middleton is described by local traders as unparalleled in recent memory, with many businesses either severely damaged or completely destroyed.
