Dublin councillor and homeless campaigner Anthony Flynn found dead

DUBLIN: Homeless campaigner and Dublin city councillor Anthony Flynn was found dead yesterday. The body of Cllr Flynn was discovered at a property in Caledon Court, East Wall on Wednesday afternoon.

The 35-year-old, who co-founded and headed Inner City Helping Homeless (ICHH), was an outspoken advocate for the homeless. The charity was founded in 2013 in response to the growing number of homeless people across the country, especially in Dublin’s northern inner city.

ICHH paid tribute to the late councillor, stating, “We are broken-hearted to say we were notified of the death of our co-founder of Inner City Helping Homeless, Anthony Flynn.

“This tragic loss is a source of deep shock to all of us at ICHH. We wish to express our sadness and deepest condolences to his family and friends at his sad passing.

“Anthony was a person who passionately cared about the plight of the homeless and fought to give them a voice and a home. As one of the founders of ICHH, he turned that belief into action.”

He was named CEO of ICHH in 2019, but had recently stepped down from the position.

Mr Flynn, who is originally from Dorset Street, was elected to Dublin City Council as an Independent in 2019. He served on the Housing Strategic Policy Committee and the Joint Policing Committee of the council.

A spokesperson for Dublin City Council said in a statement, “Dublin City Council is saddened to hear of the untimely death of Councillor Anthony Flynn. The Lord Mayor, Alison Gilliland, on behalf of Dublin City Council, extends her deepest condolences to his family and friends at this difficult time.”

Gardaí said they are investigating all the circumstances surrounding the discovery of Flynn’s body.

The body was removed from the scene yesterday and sent to the mortuary in Whitehall, where a post-mortem will be performed. A Garda spokesman said the postmortem results would “determine the course of the investigation.”
