Dublin Marathon 2021 cancelled due to COVID-19

DUBLIN: The Dublin Marathon 2021 in Ireland has been cancelled for the second year in a row due to COVID-19. Organisers announced today that the race, which was scheduled to take place on October 24 and would have seen thousands of runners traverse 26.2 miles across Dublin, has been cancelled.

Many sporting events, including the KBC Dublin Marathon, were cancelled in the country last year owing to the coronavirus pandemic. Even this year, after discussing with stakeholders, the organisers decided not to hold such a large event since it would be difficult to create a safe environment in the wake of a pandemic.

Jim Aughney, Race Director, said: “It is with great regret that we are cancelling the KBC Dublin Marathon for the second year in a row. Despite vigorous evaluations, there are still too many unknowns to be confident that we could provide a safe event given the pure scale of the marathon.

“We have a duty of care to the runners, volunteers, suppliers and supporters. This will be extremely disappointing news for all participants entered. We want to thank them for their continued support.”

However, the organisers have said that all entries for this year’s marathon will be valid for the 2022 race. Those who do not want to take advantage of this will receive a full refund.

There will be a virtual KBC Dublin Marathon over the October Bank Holiday weekend. Interested runners can enter and take part in the event on October 23, 24 and 25.
