Dublin: Retailers in Dublin city centre are reporting a strong start to post-Christmas trading, buoyed by the return of shoppers following the festive period. Long queues were seen across the city on St Stephen’s Day and in front of many stores over the past two days, raising hopes of a steady and successful sales season.
Many retailers are offering discounts of up to 50%, with studies suggesting that men are particularly active in seeking out reduced-price items. Tourists visiting Dublin are also taking advantage of the seasonal sales, adding to footfall in the city centre.
Retailers say that poor weather earlier in the holiday period, along with a rise in online shopping, had initially delayed customer turnout. However, improved weather conditions have encouraged shoppers back onto the streets, a development businesses describe as a positive sign. Some visitors, including American tourists, have remarked that Irish post-Christmas sales compare favourably with Black Friday deals in the United States.
Retail Ireland director Arnold Dillon said the fine weather has played a key role in driving strong sales, leading to increased footfall in towns and shopping centres. He noted that customers are arriving well-prepared, having researched products, prices and online availability in advance, which is boosting confidence among traders.
Meanwhile, shoppers are actively returning or exchanging Christmas gifts, though this can be challenging without a receipt. Research by the Competition and Consumer Protection Commission shows that 42% of people do not include a gift receipt with presents, while only 5% of recipients ask for one, complicating post-Christmas returns for many consumers.
